Oct - Nov 2017: Artists Residency at The MacDowell Colony

Time to unplug from the world for a five-week residency at the famed MacDowell Colony. I'll be staying in Mansfield studio (where James Baldwin stayed when he was a Fellow in 1960!) and working on a new play commissioned by Echo Theater Company in Los Angeles.

Aug 2017: TUVALU or The Saddest Song at Ignition Fest

July 2017: TUVALU or The Saddest Song at The Sundance Theatre Lab

June 2017: Artists Residency at Space on Ryder Farm

My last residency at Space was as a member of Ars Nova's Play Group. This time, I'll be heading to the working farm solo for a week of writing, resting, amazing food and basil harvesting!

June 2017: PASS OVER at Steppenwolf

In June, Steppenwolf presented the World Premiere of my play Pass Over, a mashup of the biblical Exodus story and Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, which I wrote in response to the epidemic of the extrajudicial murder of black men. The play sparked a national conversation about bias in the theater community.

Oct 2016: TUVALU or The Saddest Song at Ars Nova

Danya Taymor directs my Ars Nova Out Loud reading of my play-wit-music TUVALU or The Saddest Song. The Out Loud represents my first public showing at Ars Nova, which means my time in PlayGroup is coming to a close. I can't express how grateful I am for the friendships I've made and the opportunities I've had.

Sept 2016: FLAT SAM at Parity Play Fest

Danya Taymor directs a reading of my play FLAT SAM as part of Colt Coeur's Parity Play Fest

August 2016: BREACH at Ignition Fest

July 2016: FLAT SAM at PlayPenn

I developed my full-length play FLAT SAM with Danya Taymor at PlayPenn in Philadelphia.

June 2016: PASS OVER at Southern Rep's New Play Bacchanal

PASS OVER was named a finalist for the Ruby Prize. I got to share my play with the fine people at Southern Rep and also spent a few days in New Orleans. It's an amazing city.

April 2016: PASS OVER at Cherry Lane

As part of the 2016 Mentor Project, my full-length play PASS OVER received a workshop production mentored by Katori Hall (The MountaintopOur Lady of Kibeho). The 2016 Mentor Project was especially poignant as it was the first time that former mentees served as mentors. I am so grateful to Katori for mentoring me through this workshop, and to Lynn Nottage (who mentored Katori in 2006 and was my Dramatists Guild Fellowship mentor) for encouraging and empowering me! We can't get anywhere without the help of those who have come before.

Every summer Naked Angels hosts an intensive workshop for aspiring, young playwrights, and for the second year in a row they've invited me to participate as a Guest Artist. September 2014: I'm a Dramatists Guild Fellow

For the next nine months, I'll be sharing my work with a group of emerging theater and musical theater artists.
